Just how far are leftist liberals removed from reality?
This question came to mind when I read the May-June edition of Harvard Magazine and it’s feature article entitled “The Risks of Homeschooling.” The title is innocuous enough, but the author goes on to interview a Harvard Law professor by the name of Elizabeth Bartholet, the faculty director of Harvard Law School’s Child Advocacy Program. The interview was basically a vignette of a much longer work that Bartholet published previously in The Arizona Law Review. To the shock of many readers, this Harvard professor argued that homeschooling should actually be banned, because it not only gives parents supposedly authoritarian control over their kids, but homeschooling could even expose them to white supremacy and misogyny!
If you think this was a Saturday Night Live spoof, think again. Here is what Bartholet told Harvard Magazine:
The issue is, do we think that parents should have 24/7, essentially authoritarian control over their children from ages zero to 18? I think that’s dangerous. I think it’s always dangerous to put powerful people in charge of the powerless, and to give the powerful ones total authority…. It’s also important that children grow up exposed to community values, social values, democratic values, ideas about nondiscrimination and tolerance of other people’s viewpoints.
Apparently, the viewpoint advocating homeschooling is not welcome among such values! In her ‘academic’ piece for the Arizona Law Review, Bartholet clarifies that this ‘right to exposure to alternative views’ applies only to the secular formation of the child. The conservative Christian home is obligated to explore leftist liberal cosmopolitan values but not the other way around! Heads I win, tails you lose! As John Hirschauer over at National Review rightly points out, this Harvard Law professor’s ‘right to exposure to alternative views’ (whatever that means!) of course works only in one direction.
Unfortunately, left-wing liberals have long hated homeschooling and have set their sights on ending it. In fact, leftists have actually pointed to America’s right-wing homeschooling movement as the latest front in Russian infiltration!
However, I can think of few examples of how far leftist liberals are removed from reality. According to a major study by the Department of Education, homeschooling families are highly diverse; in fact, religion isn’t even the top reason for homeschooling! Parents overwhelmingly homeschool because they are dissatisfied with the academic instruction and environment of public schools. The City Journal concurs, saying that today’s homeschoolers “are more demographically, geographically, and ideologically diverse” than ever. And not only do homeschoolers on average score significantly higher on their SATs than their public school counterparts, but research shows that homeschool students tend to be more tolerant of those who hold alternative political and ideological loyalties.
But perhaps most humiliating of all, the incredible irony in all of this is that both this article and interview are being published at a time when literally the entire world is homeschooling! Talk about history passing these pseudo-intellectuals over!
With the whole world homeschooling in the midst of this pandemic, things have gotten so bad for the liberal left that the George Soros funded Open Democracy organization has actually proposed the banning of the family! Why? For the same reasons that this Harvard professor wants to ban homeschooling! How ironic that the left-wing liberals over at The New York Times assured us just last year that liberals emphatically do not want to destroy the family. How on earth did such a preposterous idea leap to the forefront of conservative thinking? It must be those right-wing homeschoolers!
The absurdity from the liberal left literally knows no bounds. But the beauty is: when you are at war with reality, reality always wins in the end.
