How to Opt-Out of Obamacare and Bless Fellow Christians

Posted by Steve Turley ● Oct 28, 2015 9:53:00 AM

If you are like me, voluntarily foregoing health insurance especially for my family was almost unthinkable. It would be nothing less than a nightmare for me to fail to provide adequate health coverage for my children.

Then came Obamacare.

And suddenly we realized that entitlement and taxation were the new norms governing the health insurance industry.

And with the HHS mandate forcing employers to cover abortion inducing drugs, healthcare turned into a political weapon for the advancement of secular liberal values.

Is there a remedy for all this?

There is: Healthcare Cost Sharing Ministries.

Organizations such as Samaritan Ministries, Christian Healthcare, Medi-share and Liberty HealthShare involve national networks of mutual aid that provide non-insurance, non-government ways for Christians to share together in the costs of healthcare expenses. Since the passage of Obamacare, participation in healthcare cost sharing has soared. The four main ministries boast over 340,000 members. In fact, Samaritan, the largest of the healthcare sharing ministries with over 86,000 members, has been adding hundreds of new members every month since Obamacare went into effect.

Healthcare cost sharing functions differently from conventional health insurance. Generally speaking, members send a monthly fee to an escrow account, which distributes payments for medical bills deemed eligible by the standards of the particular ministry.

These ministries provide a wonderful way in which the church can witness to what it means to be a shared life-world of mutuality and service, where Christians across the nation care for one another in an economy of gift and gratitude, in stark contrast to the dominant secular economy of entitlement and taxation.

For example, my family and I have been members of Samaritan Ministries for years now. And when we submitted a need after my son, Richard, broke his foot, we received a number of cards addressed to Richard from Christians all across the country, encouraging him with assurances of prayer for a speedy recovery. I can’t tell you how beautiful it was to share with my son the love of Christians he never even met.

Christian cost sharing ministries are getting their share of national attention as well. Fox News and the New York Times have all run reports on these alternatives to Obamacare, with similar conclusions: Christians are excited to be a part of a national network with kindred souls who covenant to take care of one another’s medical expenses.

Perhaps most important: this remedy deals with more than just symptoms; it gets to the root of the plague. Costs are lowered by two factors: the elimination of insurance companies encourages discounts from doctors, and because each person is a self-paying customer, one naturally shops around for the best price. And at the same time, Christians come together in a spirit of mutuality in sharing one another’s costs and burdens.

Everyone wins!

If there is to be a lasting remedy for secular liberalism, the church must once again assert its role as the primary agency by which healthcare remains sacred, with Christians confidently affirming that the church, not the state, has the frames of reference that can provide for a truly charitable and humane society.

So what will you do? Don’t you think it’s time to live off the secular health insurance grid, all the while blessing fellow Christians?
