President Trump is currently escalating the culture wars into uncharted territory. The Trump administration has issued an order that is officially banning what is called ‘critical race theory’ training in federal agencies. The Director of the Office of Management and Budget issued an official memo announcing the order, declaring that critical race theory is “divisive, anti-American propaganda.” Specifically, the president is concerned that
employees across the Executive Branch have been required to attend trainings where they are told that “virtually all White people contribute to racism” or where they are required to say that they “benefit from racism.” … These types of “trainings” not only run counter to the fundamental beliefs for which our Nation has stood since its inception, but they also engender division and resentment within the Federal workforce. The President has directed me to ensure that Federal agencies cease and desist from using taxpayer dollars to fund these divisive, un-American propaganda training sessions ……… The divisive, false, and demeaning propaganda of the critical race theory movement is contrary to all we stand for as Americans and should have no place in the Federal government.
Now, just in case you think that President Trump is overreacting, the following is from a manual compiled by affirmative action officer Carolyn Pitts; it will give you an accurate sense of precisely what President Trump is banning from the federal government: “In the United States at present, only whites can be racists, since whites dominate and control the institutions that create and enforce American cultural norms and values . . . blacks and other Third World peoples do not have access to the power to enforce any prejudices they may have, so they cannot, by definition, be racists.” She goes on to say that “all white individuals in our society are racist, even those free from conscious prejudice, because they receive “benefits distributed by a white, racist society through its institutions. Our institutional and cultural processes are so arranged as to automatically benefit whites, just because they are white.”
So that, in a nutshell, is critical race theory. It was brought to the United States by members of what’s called the Frankfurt School, a think tank at Goethe University Frankfurt comprised of some of the top Marxist thinkers such as Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, Wilhelm Reich, Herbert Marcuse, and Erich Fromm. After the political rise of Adolph Hitler, the Frankfurt School eventually relocated to the United States, at Columbia University in New York, where they further developed and refined the notion of critical theory. The guiding principle of critical theory was to produce an account of society that assumed that society was made up of intentional power discrepancies that deliberately oppress people; Western society is made up of power discrepancies where some people get to impose their view of the world on others, and those in power always defend the status quo to protect their arbitrary power advantages over others. So what critical theory seeks to do is to supposedly unmask and reveal this arbitrary domination found in every Western society, all of which are by definition assumed guilty of deliberately disenfranchising people. Once such power inequities are exposed, the disparities in society are explained and justice can come in and provide paths to emancipation.
Note that this is a thoroughly Marxist system: there’s an oppressive bourgeoise, a victimized proletariat, there’s exploitation of the majority by a minority, and there’s an ideological means of emancipating and liberating people from this unjust system; and, as events over the past few months have repeatedly revealed, this ideology can turn very, very violent!
President Trump is absolutely correct in declaring this ideology a threat to American ideals. In fact, the scholar Heather Mac Donald has detailed precisely how this pernicious racial logic engenders the notion that white police officers, as enforcers of this systemic domination, are engaged in a racist war against black civilians. So from this vantage point, what happened to George Floyd in Minneapolis or Jacob Blake in Kenosha are by definition not isolated incidents; they are rather indicators revealing the painful truth about an epidemic of police-on-black crime. As it turns out, the pervasiveness of critical race theory, and critical theory in general, is essential to understanding what’s really going on with the massive wave of social unrest plaguing our nation.
But Trump’s banning of critical race theory is just the beginning! The Trump administration announced they are working together with the Department of Education to review the use of the New York Times Magazine’s ‘1619 Project’ in our nation’s schools. The project asserts that American history actually began in 1619, which is cited as the date African slaves first arrived in Virginia, and everything following this – all the subsequent events studied in American history – are to be studied through this lens of exploitation. And President Trump made it clear that any school found to be using this curriculum will lose their federal funding! Trump’s policy echoes the sentiment of Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton, who back in July introduced a bill that would deny funds to any school using the 1619 Project in its curriculum.
Instead, President Trump is advocating the restoration of what he calls ‘patriotic education’ in our nation’s schools, which he sees as a necessary corrective to the lies of cultural Marxism that are currently sparking such violence and insurrection in so many cities. Polls show that Americans overwhelmingly favor a patriotic education that teaches their children to honor and revere our nation and its contribution to the world. A recent study by Rasmussen Reports found 57 percent of those surveyed agreed with the statement: “The only path to unity is to rebuild shared national identity focused on common American values and virtues of which we have plenty. This includes restoring patriotic education in our nation’s schools, where they are trying to change everything that we have learned.” With nearly 60 percent of the public agreeing with that statement, President Trump is clearly riding a supermajority wave here in pushing patriotic education!
But don’t tell that to our leftist globalist elites! Time ran the headline: “‘Patriotic Education’: Trump Rejects Grappling with America’s Racist Past.” The opening paragraph will sound familiar to anyone acquainted with the rhetoric of critical race theory: “At a moment when books about America’s racist history are selling out, and some in the country, including many in corporate boardrooms, are trying to grapple with the enduring legacy of systemic racism, President Trump and Republicans are laying out a gauzy story of America that requires no reckoning for the country’s history of slavery, racial terror and social, economic and political injustice.” What this left-wing activist disguised as a journalist obviously overlooks is that no one is advocating ignoring America’s racist past; what we unambiguously reject is grappling with such a past through the absurd premises of the very critical race theory that produces the farcical virtue signaling that has become commonplace with Time Magazine!
So this is a bold move by Trump, both to cancel any and all critical race theory classes in the federal government and to stop cold in its tracks the disparaging program of the 1619 Project in our public schools! Once again, President Trump is showing himself to be faithful to his promise of draining the swamp, most particularly, the pernicious swamp of cultural Marxism.
